The Permian Basin Fair and Exposition Scholarship Board
Awards $34,000 at the 2009 Permian Basin Fair & Expo

Since the beginning of the Permian Basin Fair and Exposition in 1975, some monies have been given back to the community in the form of college scholarships.  However, the Fair decided to increase that commitment in 1995 by establishing an independent scholarship board to place greater emphasis on the Fair’s scholarship effort.  As a 501 c (3) entity, the scholarship board accepts tax deductible contributions from corporations and individuals each year, and it works to increase both the number and the amount of scholarships given.  Currently, scholarships are awarded annually to qualified young people in farming and ranching, creative arts, youth, and the scholarship pageant divisions of the Fair.  The scholarship board oversees the disbursement and administration of scholarship monies.
The year 2000 marked the 25th year anniversary of the Permian Basin Fair.  As part of that celebration, the Fair awarded $25,000 in scholarships.  Since that year, the Fair has provided as much money in scholarships as the number of years the Fair is old, for an annual increase of $1000.  This year the Fair awarded $34,000 in educational scholarships.

Since the inception of the Fair in 1976, well over half a million dollars has been awarded in scholarship monies to over 200 young people in the Permian Basin.  The Fair itself contributes $16,000 each year to the scholarship program and, at present, two commercial donors and one foundation contribute collectively another $6,000 annually.  The Scholarship Board is responsible for raising remaining funds necessary to reach its yearly goal.  It does so through fund raisers and donations from individual contributors.

Members of the Scholarship Board consist of a few Fair Board members and interested community citizens.  For more information, please call 432-550-3232 or write to the Permian Basin Fair and Exposition Scholarship Board at 218 West 46th Street; Odessa, Texas 79764.
